11+ Tuition for Maidenhead Families: Bucks and Slough Tests

There are no state grammar schools in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, so Maidenhead children who want a grammar place register for the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test, the Slough Consortium test, or both. Dr Khan Tuition in Burnham, about 3.9 road miles away, prepares children for both. Book a free consultation on 01753 378222.

Are there grammar schools in the Royal Borough?

Not state ones. Every state secondary in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is non-selective, including Furze Platt Senior School, Desborough College and Cox Green School. The only schools listed as selective there are independent. So for a state grammar place, Maidenhead children look across the borders, to Buckinghamshire and Slough.

Other Bucks and Slough grammars are further away, including Upton Court (6.2 miles), St Bernard's Catholic (6.4 miles) and Beaconsfield High School for girls (6.5 miles). Being nearer doesn't mean a Maidenhead child has priority: places follow each school's own admissions policy, which may include catchment or priority areas. Read each policy before you rely on a school.

Registering a Maidenhead child for the Bucks 11+

Children at Buckinghamshire state primaries are entered for the Bucks test automatically. Children at primary schools in the Royal Borough aren't, so parents must register them with Buckinghamshire Council. According to the council's timeline for September 2028 entry, registration runs from May to June 2027, the test is in early September 2027 and results come in mid-October. A score of 121 qualifies a child for consideration. Our Bucks 11+ guide explains the two multiple-choice papers and the practice test.

How we prepare

How lessons feel

We're independent of the grammar schools, the councils and the organisations that run the tests. This guide sets out the route for families living in the Royal Borough, which is different from the one Buckinghamshire families follow.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Registering for the Slough Consortium 11+

Any family can register for the Slough Consortium test, wherever they live. It's used by Herschel, Langley, St Bernard's Catholic and Upton Court grammar schools, and a standardised score of 111 makes a child eligible. Quest Assessments sets the test from September 2027. The Consortium hasn't yet published its 2027 registration or test dates; our Slough 11+ guide will carry them as soon as they're out.

Applying through the Royal Borough

Whichever tests your child sits, you apply for secondary places online through your home council, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead. The Royal Borough says all applications, including those for grammar schools in other areas, must be made through your home local authority, while questions about the 11+ itself go to the council or consortium that runs the test. It hasn't published its other dates for September 2028 entry yet, but the closing date is fixed nationally at 31 October. You can list grammar schools in Buckinghamshire and Slough alongside non-selective schools, in your order of preference.

Sitting both tests

Many families keep both options open. That means two separate registrations, two test days in early autumn and two different scoring systems: 121 to qualify in Buckinghamshire and 111 for Slough eligibility. The formats differ too, with two multiple-choice papers for Bucks and two Quest papers for Slough from 2027. We help families decide whether both are worthwhile for their child, and plan preparation to suit.

Questions to ask before you register

Before committing to one test or both, it's worth thinking through a few practical points as a family:

  • The daily journey. Burnham, Marlow and Slough are all a drive or a bus ride from Maidenhead. Picture the school run in Year 7, not just on test day.
  • The admissions policies. Check how each school ranks applicants when it's oversubscribed, and whether it has a catchment or priority area that includes your address.
  • Your other choices. The application form has room for several schools, so think about which non-selective schools you'd be happy with too.
  • Your child. Some children enjoy timed tests; others find them stressful. That can shape whether sitting two tests is a good idea.

We're happy to talk through any of these at the consultation.

When to start preparing

Most families start in Year 4 or Year 5. Both tests are sat at the very beginning of Year 6, and registration falls in the summer term of Year 5, so it helps to have a plan by the spring. An earlier start isn't about more hours: it allows reading, vocabulary and maths to grow at a comfortable pace.

How we prepare Maidenhead children

  1. Diagnose. We assess verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths.
  2. Weekly plan. You'll receive a written, personalised plan no more than 48 hours after we meet.
  3. Test-specific practice. Multiple-choice technique and timing for the Bucks papers, and broad skills for the Quest papers, following official guidance as it's released.
  4. Feedback. Regular updates, so you can decide which tests to register for.

Lessons can be 1-to-1, and online sessions are available for some lessons. Our 11+ tuition page has more on our approach, and our KS3 tuition supports children after the 11+.
