Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

GCSE science is a lot of content, three subjects' worth of vocabulary and a surprising amount of maths. Students rarely struggle with all of it. Usually it's a handful of topics, a type of calculation or the long written answers, and once we know which, lessons can go straight to them.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

Combined science or triple science: what's the difference?

Schools decide which route each student follows, so this isn't a question of which is better. It helps to know what each one involves, though.

Combined scienceSeparate (triple) sciences
QualificationsOne double award, worth two GCSEsThree GCSEs: biology, chemistry and physics
GradesTwo equal or adjacent grades, from 9-9 down to 1-1Three separate grades from 9 to 1
ContentBiology, chemistry and physics in one course, with at least 30% of the content from eachThe full content of each science
TiersFoundation (1-1 to 5-5) or Higher (4-4 to 9-9)Foundation (grades 1 to 5) or Higher (grades 4 to 9)

Both routes lead on to A-Level science. Whichever your child is taking, we'll plan around the topics and papers their school has entered them for.

GCSE chemistry tuition

Chemistry is where many students first meet calculations that don't look like maths lessons. Moles, concentrations and percentage yield all need a calm, step-by-step method. We also cover bonding and structure, rates of reaction, energy changes and organic chemistry. Showing working clearly matters, because method marks can still be earned when a final answer slips. Marks are most often lost on multi-step calculations and on six-mark answers that describe rather than explain. If you're looking for a GCSE chemistry tutor near me, lessons start by finding which of those is costing your child marks.

GCSE physics tuition

Physics rewards students who are comfortable with equations. We work on energy, electricity, forces, waves and the particle model, and spend time on recalling equations, rearranging them and handling units. Students who need help with GCSE physics usually find that once the maths feels routine, the physics makes much more sense. That's why a GCSE physics tutor near me search often turns out to be a maths question in disguise.

GCSE biology tuition

Biology looks like the most "learnable" science, but the exam tests more than recall. We cover cell biology, organisation, infection and response, homeostasis, inheritance and ecology, and practise the extended answers and data questions where students lose marks. For families looking for a GCSE biology tutor near me, the focus is precise vocabulary and answers built around the command word.

Required practicals: why they matter in the written exams

Students must complete at least eight specified practicals in each separate science, or 16 for combined science. AQA's Combined Science: Trilogy specification lists 21 required practicals. These aren't just classroom tasks: 15% of the marks in the written exams assess practical skills and understanding.

Practical questions ask about method, variables, results, errors and how an experiment could be improved. In lessons we revise each required practical so students can explain it clearly and answer the evaluation questions that follow.

Maths in GCSE science

A good share of science marks test maths skills. At least 10% of the marks in biology, 20% in chemistry and 30% in physics assess maths, and in combined science it's at least 20%, spread across the three sciences in a 1:2:3 ratio. We teach graphs, rearranging, standard form and significant figures in a science context, and students who need more support can add GCSE maths tuition for the underlying skills.

Exam boards and papers

As an example, AQA's papers look like this:

AQACombined Science: TrilogyBiology, chemistry or physics (separate)
PapersSix papers, two per scienceTwo papers per science
Length1 hour 15 minutes each1 hour 45 minutes each
Marks70 marks per paper100 marks per paper

Edexcel and OCR papers are structured differently. We'll check your child's board and specification at the consultation and plan from there.

Revising three sciences without running out of time

With three subjects to cover, revision can easily turn into rereading notes. We help students build a realistic weekly routine instead: short retrieval practice on key facts, a few exam questions in each science, and one topic at a time worked through properly. Past-paper questions are marked against the mark scheme, so students see exactly where marks were won and lost. We also keep a running list of each student's weakest topics, which becomes the focus of the next few lessons. Little and often works far better than a burst of revision before school tests, and it leaves time for the subjects outside science that also matter.

How our GCSE science lessons work

  1. Diagnose. A first assessment shows which topics, calculations and question types need work in each science.
  2. Plan. A personalised weekly plan follows within 48 hours of the consultation.
  3. Exam strategy. Lessons build in command words, six-mark answers, calculations and required-practical questions.
  4. Feedback. Parents receive regular progress updates.

Both 1-to-1 lessons and online sessions are options. Our GCSE tuition page explains how science fits with maths and English, and the A-Level science page shows the next step for students who want to carry on. Younger students can build foundations through KS3 tuition.

Common questions

GCSE science FAQs

What's the difference between combined and triple science?
Combined science is a double award worth two GCSEs, with two equal or adjacent grades, and at least 30% of its content comes from each science. Separate (triple) science gives three GCSEs, one each in biology, chemistry and physics.
Are required practicals in the GCSE exams?
Yes. Students carry out the practicals in school, and 15% of the marks in the written exams assess practical skills and understanding.
How much maths is in GCSE physics?
At least 30% of the marks in GCSE physics assess maths skills, compared with at least 20% in chemistry and 10% in biology.
Which exam boards do you cover for GCSE science?
Lessons follow your child's own science specification. Tell us the board for each science at the consultation and practice questions will match it.
Can my child switch between Foundation and Higher tier?
Schools make tier entries, so that decision sits with your child's school. We help students prepare thoroughly for the tier they're entered for, and can cover Higher content if a move is being discussed.
Is 1-to-1 GCSE science tuition available?
Yes. A student can have 1-to-1 lessons in one science or all three, built around their own plan.
