The Dr Khan Method

How we prepare students

Diagnose

We compare your child's current maths and science with the official test specification, finding topics to revisit and question types that still feel unfamiliar.

Structured Learning

Within 48 hours of the consultation, you'll receive a plan that fits around A-Level lessons and deadlines and focuses on the papers or modules your child actually needs.

Exam Strategy

We use UAT-UK's free official practice materials as reference points, and practise working without a calculator, pacing each paper or module and answering every question.

Feedback Loop

Progress updates show which topics are secure and which still slow your child down, so the final weeks go where they matter most.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Admissions tests sit on top of a full A-Level timetable, and they measure something different from school exams: how well a student can apply familiar maths and science quickly, without a calculator, to questions they haven't seen before. Whether you're looking for ESAT tutoring for an engineering or science application, or TMUA preparation for maths, economics or computer science, this page explains what each test involves, who needs it and the dates that matter, with links to the official sources. We're independent of UAT-UK and of every university mentioned here.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

January 2027 sitting: booking closes 21 December at 6pm

For 2027 entry, the second and final sitting of both tests runs from 4 to 8 January 2027. Booking closes at 6pm on 21 December 2026, and results are due on 8 February 2027. Candidates can sit each test only once per admissions cycle. Most Cambridge and Oxford applicants needed the October sitting, so the January dates mainly serve applicants to the other universities that use the tests.

If your child needs a January test, book it with UAT-UK before 6pm on 21 December. For the January sitting, requests for access arrangements had to be made by 7 December and bursary requests by 6pm on 14 December, and UAT-UK asks for these before a test is booked. Once a test is booked, we can help plan the weeks that remain.

What is the TMUA?

The TMUA, the Test of Mathematics for University Admission, lasts 2 hours 30 minutes and is split into two papers: Applications of Mathematical Knowledge, and Mathematical Reasoning. Both are multiple-choice. Calculators aren't allowed, and marks aren't deducted for wrong answers, so it's worth attempting every question. The content is based on maths typically covered in Higher-tier GCSE and AS-level courses, but the questions demand speed, precision and careful logical reasoning, including some ideas from elementary logic and proof.

Which universities use the TMUA?

Seven universities use the TMUA for some courses: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick and Durham. Examples include Mathematics, Computer Science and Economics at Cambridge, Maths and Computing at Imperial, and BSc Economics and BSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics at LSE. Depending on the university and course, the test may be compulsory or optional, and requirements change, so always check each course page before booking.

What is the ESAT?

The ESAT, the Engineering and Science Admissions Test, is made up of 40-minute multiple-choice modules taken on computer at a test centre. Every candidate sits Mathematics 1, and most sit two more modules from Mathematics 2, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, depending on the course. As with the TMUA, calculators aren't allowed and there's no penalty for a wrong answer. Modules can't be changed at the test centre, so it's essential to check which ones each course requires before booking.

Which universities use the ESAT?

Four universities use the ESAT: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL, for some engineering, physics, natural sciences and veterinary courses. At Cambridge, for example, it's used for Engineering, Natural Sciences, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, and Veterinary Medicine. At Imperial, several engineering departments and Physics use it.

How we prepare students

How admissions test preparation differs from A-Level revision

A-Level exams reward thorough knowledge of a specification, built up over two years. The TMUA and ESAT reward something narrower and sharper: fast, accurate work on questions designed to be unfamiliar, with no calculator to fall back on. That means mental arithmetic, confident algebra and estimation matter more than usual, and so does the discipline of moving on from a question that's taking too long. Our lessons treat these as skills in their own right, practised little and often alongside school work.

When to start

For students sitting in January 2027, the weeks before the test are best spent on timed practice and on closing specific gaps. For next year's applicants, today's Year 12 students applying for 2028 entry, starting in the spring or summer of Year 12 leaves time to prepare for an October sitting without squeezing A-Level revision. That's a suggestion rather than a rule, and we'll talk it through at the consultation. UAT-UK hasn't yet published the 2028-entry dates; we'll add them here once it does.

Where lessons take place

Admissions tests are taken by applicants from across the UK, and the centre offers online sessions as well as face-to-face lessons. If you've been looking for a TMUA tutor in the UK who can work remotely, ask about online preparation at the consultation. For local families, our centre is on Burnham High Street, about 3.5 road miles from Slough town centre and 3.9 from Maidenhead, and face-to-face lessons follow the same plan. Searching for TMUA tutors near me? Everything starts with the same free consultation.

Strong A-Level foundations make test preparation far easier. Our A-Level tuition page covers sixth-form subjects, with more detail on A-Level maths and further maths and A-Level chemistry, biology and physics. Younger students can start with GCSE maths tuition, and you can return to the homepage at any time.

Common questions

TMUA & ESAT FAQs

What's the difference between the TMUA and the ESAT?
The TMUA tests mathematical thinking and reasoning for some maths, economics and computer science courses. The ESAT tests maths and science knowledge for some engineering, physics, natural sciences and veterinary courses, through 40-minute modules.
Which universities need the TMUA?
Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick and Durham use it for some courses. Requirements differ by course, so check each university's course page.
Which universities and courses need the ESAT?
Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL use it for some engineering, physics, natural sciences and veterinary courses. The modules required also depend on the course.
When are the TMUA and ESAT taken?
For 2027 entry there are two sittings: 12–16 October 2026 and 4–8 January 2027. Booking for the January sitting closes at 6pm on 21 December 2026.
Can I sit the TMUA in January if I'm applying to Cambridge?
Normally not. Cambridge and Oxford applicants are expected to sit in October, apart from a few exceptions such as some mature and foundation-year applicants.
Is there negative marking in the TMUA or ESAT?
No. Neither test deducts marks for wrong answers, so it's worth answering every question.
Do you offer online TMUA and ESAT preparation?
The centre offers online sessions as well as lessons on Burnham High Street. Ask at the consultation how TMUA or ESAT preparation would be arranged for your child.
