Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Taplow, Hitcham and Dorney lie on the Maidenhead side of Burnham, along the A4 and down towards the Thames. They're Buckinghamshire villages, which shapes the 11+ in a way that's different from neighbouring Slough and Maidenhead.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Tuition for Taplow families

From Taplow, the centre is about 2.7 road miles away, around 7 minutes' drive, although it's only 1.3 miles in a straight line. Most families come along the A4 Bath Road, then up Hitcham Road and Stomp Road into Burnham High Street.

St Nicolas' Church of England Combined School on Rectory Road is Taplow's village primary, for children aged 4 to 11. We name it only as a local school, with no connection to us.

Tuition for Dorney and Dorney Reach families

Dorney is about 2.5 road miles away, roughly 6 minutes by car. The usual route is Lake End Road (the B3026) and Huntercombe Lane, then Stomp Road into the High Street.

Dorney School on Harcourt Close in Dorney Reach is the local primary, again for ages 4 to 11, and again named only as a neighbour.

Hitcham

Hitcham is effectively part of Burnham, about 0.75 road miles or 3 minutes from the centre via Hitcham Lane, Gore Road and Minniecroft Road. That makes it the closest of the three villages on this page to our centre.

The Bucks 11+ for Taplow and Dorney children

Because Taplow and Dorney are in Buckinghamshire, children at the local state primaries, such as St Nicolas' and Dorney School, are entered for the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test automatically. Parents who would rather their child didn't sit it can opt out through Buckinghamshire Council. A score of 121 qualifies a child for consideration at the county's grammar schools, and places are then offered under each school's admissions policy. Burnham Grammar School is just 0.3 miles from our centre; our Burnham Grammar School 11+ guide explains how entry there works.

Buckinghamshire Council's timeline for September 2028 entry puts the test in early September 2027, results in mid-October 2027 and applications by 31 October 2027. Children here can also register for the Slough Consortium test if you'd like to keep more options open. Our guides to the Bucks 11+ and the Slough 11+ cover both, and the 11+ tuition page compares them.

Getting ready when entry is automatic

Automatic entry is convenient, but it can also mean the test arrives sooner than families expect. Children sit it at the very start of Year 6, often within days of returning from the summer holiday. The Buckinghamshire Grammar Schools send familiarisation materials to parents in the summer term of Year 5, which show the style of the two multiple-choice papers and how answers are recorded.

We usually suggest thinking about preparation in Year 4 or early in Year 5. Our lessons begin with a diagnostic across verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal reasoning, then build skills steadily with regular timed practice in the multiple-choice format. Parents get updates along the way, so the decision about whether to stay entered or opt out can be made with real information.

An SL6 postcode doesn't mean Maidenhead

Many homes in Taplow and Dorney have SL6 postcodes, which belong to the Maidenhead post town. That's a postal label, not a council boundary: Taplow and Dorney are in Buckinghamshire. It matters for the 11+, because automatic entry for the Bucks test depends on attending a Buckinghamshire state primary. If you're unsure which applies to your child, ask us at the consultation or check with Buckinghamshire Council.

KS3, GCSE and A-Level

After primary school, our KS3 tuition helps children in Years 7 to 9 build firm foundations. In Years 10 and 11 our GCSE tuition covers maths, English and the sciences, and sixth-formers can continue with A-Level tuition. Each student follows their own weekly plan, with progress updates for parents and exam technique built in as GCSEs and A-Levels get closer.

1-to-1 and online lessons

Every level can be taught 1-to-1. Online sessions are also available and use the same plan as lessons in Burnham.
