Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

These three subjects have more in common than they first seem. Each asks students to write extended answers under time pressure, and each hides more numbers than most students expect: data in economics, statistics in psychology, research methods in sociology. That's usually where marks slip away, and it's where our lessons start.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

A-Level economics tuition

A-Level economics covers microeconomics (how markets work, and how they fail) and macroeconomics (the national and international economy). Students need to interpret data, draw and explain diagrams, and write evaluative essays that weigh up different outcomes. At least 20% of the marks assess quantitative skills, such as calculating percentage changes and reading index numbers, so a confident grasp of the maths really pays off.

If you've been searching for an A-Level economics tutor near me, we'll begin by finding out whether your child's difficulty is the theory, the diagrams, the calculations or the essays, because each needs a different fix.

How A-Level economics is examined

Using AQA's A-Level Economics (7136) as an example:

AQA economicsContentLength and marks
Paper 1Markets and market failure2 hours, 80 marks
Paper 2National and international economy2 hours, 80 marks
Paper 3Economic principles and issues: 30 marks of multiple choice and a 50-mark case study2 hours, 80 marks

Other boards structure their papers differently, so we'll check your child's specification first.

A-Level psychology tuition

Psychology covers approaches, biopsychology, research methods, issues and debates, and a set of optional topics. Students often enjoy the content but underestimate research methods, where they need to design studies, interpret results and use statistics. At least 10% of the marks assess maths skills at Level 2 or above. For families looking for an A-Level psychology tutor near me, we combine content revision with plenty of practice on the short-answer and extended-writing questions that carry the most marks.

How A-Level psychology is examined

AQA's A-Level Psychology (7182) has three papers, each 2 hours long and worth 96 marks. Questions range from multiple choice and short answers to extended writing, and Paper 3 includes optional topics chosen by the school. Students who know exactly what each question type is asking for find the long answers much easier to plan.

A-Level sociology tuition

Sociology rewards students who can link theory to evidence. AQA's A-Level Sociology (7192) has three 2-hour papers of 80 marks each: Education with Theory and Methods; Topics in Sociology; and Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods. We help students build a bank of studies and concepts, apply them to the question set, and evaluate them clearly. If your child needs help with sociology A-Level essays in particular, that's often the best place to start.

The three subjects side by side

Subject (AQA example)PapersQuestion typesWhere marks are often lost
EconomicsThree 2-hour papers, 80 marks eachData response, essays, multiple choice, case studyUnbalanced evaluation; diagrams not explained; calculations rushed
PsychologyThree 2-hour papers, 96 marks eachMultiple choice, short answer, extended writingResearch methods and statistics; studies described but not evaluated
SociologyThree 2-hour papers, 80 marks eachShort answers, source-based and extended essaysTheory not linked to evidence; answers drifting from the question

The "where marks are lost" column reflects common patterns rather than official statistics, and every student is different, which is why each plan starts with a diagnostic.

Essay technique across all three

The highest marks in these subjects go to answers that are well planned, balanced and focused on the question. In lessons we work on:

  • Planning quickly. A short plan in the first few minutes keeps an essay on track.
  • Knowledge, application and evaluation. We explain in plain English what the assessment objectives mean and how examiners reward them.
  • Using evidence. Studies, data and real-world examples, chosen for the question rather than learned by rote.
  • Timing. Practice under timed conditions, so long answers get the time they deserve.

Strong essay skills often start earlier, with GCSE English, and the maths behind economics links closely to A-Level maths.

Thinking about economics at university?

Some universities use the TMUA as part of admissions for certain economics courses, including Cambridge Economics for 2027 entry. Requirements vary by course and change from year to year, so check each university's page. Our TMUA and ESAT tuition page explains the test.

How our lessons work

  1. Diagnose. We find which topics, skills and question types need work.
  2. Weekly plan. Within 48 hours of the consultation, you'll have a written plan tailored to your child.
  3. Exam strategy. Essay planning, data response, research methods and timing.
  4. Feedback loop. Parents hear regularly how their child is progressing.

Sessions with Dr Khan can be booked depending on his availability, and lessons can be 1-to-1. Online sessions are available too.
