The Dr Khan Method

How our A-Level science lessons work

Diagnose

We check your child's GCSE science and maths foundations alongside their recent sixth-form assessments, subject by subject.

Structured Learning

A personalised plan arrives within 48 hours of the consultation. Weekly lessons work through the content in a sensible order and return to weaker topics before they turn into gaps.

Exam Strategy

We practise multi-step calculations, data and practical questions and extended answers, using mark schemes to show what examiners credit.

Feedback Loop

Weekly updates show how each science is progressing, so priorities can shift as school assessment results come in.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Science A-Levels are where many future doctors, dentists, engineers and researchers first discover how demanding their chosen path will be. The amount of content rises sharply after GCSE, the maths gets heavier, and exam questions increasingly ask students to apply ideas to situations they haven't met before. Our science tuition is built around those three pressures.

SubjectWhat lessons concentrate on
ChemistryOrganic mechanisms, calculations and practical questions
BiologyContent recall, data analysis and extended answers
PhysicsMaths-heavy problem-solving across mechanics, fields and waves

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

A-Level chemistry tuition

Chemistry asks students to juggle three quite different kinds of work: physical chemistry calculations, inorganic trends and organic reaction mechanisms. Organic chemistry is often the turning point, because mechanisms have to be understood rather than simply memorised. We work through them step by step, practise moles, equilibria and energetics calculations until they become routine, and show how practical skills are tested on paper. If you've been looking for A-Level chemistry tutors near me, our centre on Burnham High Street offers face-to-face chemistry lessons, with online sessions as an alternative.

A-Level biology tuition

Biology carries a great deal of content, from cells and genetics to ecology and physiology, and examiners reward precise vocabulary. Students also need to handle data confidently: reading graphs, carrying out statistical tests and evaluating experiments. Extended-response questions ask them to link ideas from different topics in one well-organised answer. We help students build a revision system they can keep up with, practise data questions regularly and plan longer answers before writing them. For anyone after an A-Level biology tutor near me with lessons in person, the same weekly plan and method apply.

A-Level physics tuition

Physics is the most maths-heavy of the three. Mechanics, electricity, fields, waves and particle physics all depend on rearranging equations, handling units and working with graphs and vectors. The hardest questions combine several ideas at once, so students need a reliable way to break a problem into steps. Our lessons spend as much time on that problem-solving process as on the physics itself. Families searching for an A-Level physics tutor near me can book the same free consultation as for any other subject.

The maths inside A-Level science

The Department for Education sets a minimum amount of maths in each science A-Level. At least 10% of the marks in biology, 20% in chemistry and 40% in physics must assess mathematical skills at Level 2 (GCSE standard) or above, applied in a scientific context. In practice, a physics student who is unsure with algebra will lose marks on physics they understand, and a chemistry student who hesitates over rearranging equations will lose time on every calculation. We build that maths into science lessons, and students who also take maths can read about our A-Level maths tuition.

Required practicals and the practical endorsement

Students taking A-Level biology, chemistry or physics must carry out at least 12 practical activities during the course, in their school or college. Their teachers assess these practical skills for the practical endorsement, which is reported separately from the A-Level grade, as Pass or Not Classified. Practical knowledge is tested in the written exams too, through questions on methods, results, uncertainties and evaluation.

We prepare students for practical questions in the written papers: interpreting data, spotting sources of error and explaining how an experiment could be improved.

Aiming for medicine, dentistry, engineering or science?

Entry requirements vary by university and course, so one of the most useful steps in Year 12 is to check exactly which subjects and grades each course asks for. Many medicine and dentistry courses also use an admissions test, such as the UCAT; our focus is on the science A-Levels themselves.

Some engineering, physics, natural sciences and veterinary courses at Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL ask applicants to sit the ESAT, the Engineering and Science Admissions Test. Our ESAT preparation page explains its modules and dates.

How our A-Level science lessons work

Students are taught by Dr Khan, depending on availability, or by one of our tutors. There's no minimum contract, though a full term is what we recommend.

Where our science students have gone

Two former students have kindly shared their stories on our site:

"I got A*A* at A-Level in Biology and Chemistry, and I'm now studying Dentistry at King's College London."

GunnpreetA-Level Biology & Chemistry

"Dr Khan tutored me through GCSE and A-Level. I went on to a Master's at Oxford and I'm now doing a PhD at Bristol."

AmirGCSE & A-Level Sciences

Their results reflect their own hard work, and we share them as examples of where science A-Levels can lead rather than as promises.

Science students from Burnham, Cippenham, Taplow and Maidenhead

Burnham Grammar School, which has its own sixth form, is 0.3 miles from our centre, and Herschel Grammar is about 2.3 miles away; we name them only as local neighbours and have no link with either. By road, Britwell is about 1.8 miles away, Cippenham about 2.3, Taplow about 2.7 and Maidenhead about 3.9, with Slough-side families around 3.5 road miles from the High Street.

Our A-Level tuition page covers every sixth-form subject we teach, and GCSE science tuition will help younger students build strong foundations. 1-to-1 tuition explains individual lessons, or you can visit our homepage.

Common questions

A-Level science FAQs

Do you teach A-Level chemistry, biology and physics?
Yes. We teach all three A-Level sciences, and students can have lessons in one, two or all three. Each subject follows its own plan.
Which exam boards do you cover for A-Level sciences?
Let us know your child's board for each science at the consultation, and lessons and practice questions will follow that specification.
How much maths is in A-Level physics and chemistry?
A good deal. Under Department for Education rules, at least 40% of the marks in physics and 20% in chemistry assess maths skills at GCSE standard or above, so we build that maths into lessons.
Can you help with required practicals?
We prepare students for the practical questions in their written exams, such as analysing results, handling uncertainties and improving methods. The practical activities themselves, and the practical endorsement, are completed and assessed at school or college.
My child wants to study medicine or dentistry. Can you help with their science A-Levels?
Yes. We support the science A-Levels these courses usually ask for, through a personalised weekly plan. Admissions tests and entry requirements differ by university, so check each course carefully.
Is 1-to-1 or online A-Level science tuition available?
Yes. 1-to-1 lessons are available at our Burnham centre, and online sessions are an option for students balancing several sciences with a busy timetable.
