Slough 11+ Tuition: Preparing for the Slough Consortium Test

The Slough 11+ is the shared entrance test for Herschel, Langley, St Bernard's Catholic and Upton Court grammar schools. Children need a standardised score of 111 to be eligible, and Quest Assessments sets the test from September 2027. Dr Khan Tuition at 36 High Street, Burnham prepares children for it, and a free 30-minute consultation is available on 01753 378222.

Which schools use the Slough Consortium 11+?

Four state grammar schools share one test and one eligibility score:

SchoolAddressDistance from our centre (straight line)
Herschel Grammar SchoolNorthampton Avenue, SL1 3BW2.3 miles (about 2.7 by road)
Upton Court Grammar SchoolLascelles Road, SL3 7PR4.0 miles
St Bernard's Catholic Grammar SchoolLangley Road, SL3 7AF4.1 miles
Langley Grammar SchoolReddington Drive, SL3 7QS5.2 miles

All four are mixed, selective schools with sixth forms. Sitting the test once gives a result that counts for any of them, although each school then offers places under its own admissions policy.

What's changing: Quest Assessments from September 2027

GL Assessment set the September 2026 test. From the September 2027 test, Quest Assessments takes over. That sitting is for children starting secondary school in September 2028, which means those in Year 5 in 2026–27.

According to the Consortium schools, the Quest test will have two papers covering verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths, with a structure and format similar to the current test. Quest marks and standardises the papers under the Consortium's own contract, and the scores aren't shared with other schools.

What we know, and what isn't published yet

Families often ask us for details that simply haven't been released. Here's an honest split, based on the schools' own pages as of October 2026:

Published by the Consortium schoolsNot yet published

Verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English and mathsAnswer format

You'll find confident claims about the new papers on some websites. Until the schools or Quest confirm them, we treat those as guesswork, and we'll update this table when official details appear.

How we prepare

How lessons feel

We're independent of the Slough Consortium and its schools. This guide draws on what the schools themselves have published, and it says plainly where details haven't been released yet.

Is there a pass mark for the Slough 11+?

Not as such. A standardised score of 111 makes a child eligible for a Consortium grammar school, and the schools describe that as roughly the top 35% of those sitting the test. Eligibility isn't an offer, though. When a school has more eligible applicants than places, it applies the oversubscription criteria in its admissions policy, so it's worth reading each school's policy before you list it.

Who can sit the Slough test?

Any family can register a child, wherever they live. There's no automatic entry, so even children at Slough primaries need registering. Families who live outside Slough borough still name the schools on their own home council's common application form. The Slough registration is completely separate from the Buckinghamshire one.

Slough 11+ key dates

The pattern repeats each year, but the dates for the next round haven't been announced. For reference, here's the most recent cycle alongside the next one.

Sitting both the Slough and Bucks tests

Many families near Burnham keep both routes open. A child can sit the Slough Consortium test and the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test in the same autumn, as long as each one is registered for separately. The two tests use different scores: 111 for Slough eligibility and 121 to qualify in Buckinghamshire. Our Bucks 11+ guide explains how the Bucks test works.

How we prepare children for the Slough 11+

Preparation follows the same four stages for every child, adapted to this test:

  1. Diagnose. A first assessment shows how your child is doing in verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, English and maths, and where the gaps are.
  2. Plan. You'll receive a personalised weekly plan within 48 hours of the consultation.
  3. Practise. Lessons mix all four skill areas, as the test does, with timing and technique built in. We'll follow any familiarisation guidance the Consortium or Quest releases rather than guessing at the format.
  4. Feedback. Parents get regular progress updates, so you always know what's next.

Lessons can be 1-to-1, and online sessions are available. After the test, our KS3 tuition helps children settle into secondary school work.

Choosing 11+ tuition for the Slough test

With a new test provider arriving, it's worth asking any tutor or centre a few plain questions. How do they know what the Quest papers will look like? Will they follow official guidance as it's released, rather than rumour? How often will they report progress to you? And will they tell you honestly if your child would be better served by a later start, or by focusing on one test rather than two? We'd encourage you to ask us the same questions at the consultation.

Good preparation for a reasoning test builds real skills: reading carefully, spotting patterns and working steadily against the clock. That matters more than usual while the new format is still being finalised, because skills carry over to whatever the final papers look like, and tricks for one format don't.

Families we teach

Our centre is on Burnham High Street. Cippenham, Britwell, Haymill and Lynch Hill, all part of Slough borough, are between about 1 and 2.5 road miles away, and Slough town centre is about 3.5 road miles (roughly 10 minutes via Windsor Lane, Burnham Lane and the A4). Children from Burnham and Taplow can register for the Slough test too. Maidenhead families can find their registration route in our guide for Maidenhead families. Our 11+ tuition page compares both local tests.
