The Dr Khan Method

How we prepare children for the 11+

Our 11+ programme follows the same four stages Dr Khan uses at every level, shaped around younger learners and multiple-choice papers.

Diagnose

First we find out where your child is now. A diagnostic across maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning shows which question types feel secure and which ones trip them up.

Structured Learning

A personalised plan follows within 48 hours of your consultation. Weekly lessons then work through it in order, so new skills rest on firm foundations.

Exam Strategy

Multiple-choice papers reward speed and care in equal measure. We practise pacing, ruling out wrong options and spotting the small slips that cost marks when the clock is running.

Feedback Loop

You'll get weekly progress updates, so you can see what's improving and what needs more time before test day.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Our centre sits on Burnham High Street, close to where Buckinghamshire meets Slough borough. That means plenty of local parents have two tests to think about rather than one. Below you'll find a plain-English summary of each, how we prepare children, and some honest thoughts on when to begin.

Which 11+ will my child sit?

Where you live shapes the choice, but it doesn't limit you to one test. Burnham, Lent Rise, Hitcham, Taplow, Dorney and Farnham Royal are in Buckinghamshire, and children at Bucks state primaries are entered for the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test automatically. Cippenham, Britwell, Haymill and Lynch Hill are part of Slough borough. Families on either side can register for the other test too, and the Slough Consortium accepts applications from families who live outside Slough, including Buckinghamshire families. The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead has no grammar schools of its own, so Maidenhead families can register for either test, or both.

What does the Bucks 11+ test?

The Bucks Secondary Transfer Test is set by GL Assessment and is the way into Buckinghamshire's 13 grammar schools. Children sit two multiple-choice papers. The first covers verbal skills: comprehension, technical English and verbal reasoning. The second combines maths with non-verbal and spatial reasoning. A score of 121 is the qualifying mark.

Pupils at Buckinghamshire state primaries are entered automatically unless their parents opt out. Everyone else needs to register, and for the 2026 test that window ran through May and into early June. Today's Year 5 children are the next group to sit it, around September 2027. Confirmed dates will appear on buckinghamshire.gov.uk, and we'd always check them there rather than rely on last year's calendar. Our Bucks 11+ tuition guide will walk through registration in detail.

What does the Slough Consortium 11+ test?

Four grammar schools share the Slough Consortium test: Herschel Grammar, Langley Grammar, St Bernard's Catholic Grammar and Upton Court Grammar. It assesses maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, and the eligibility score is 111.

The headline news is a change of provider. GL Assessment sets the September 2026 paper, but Quest Assessments takes over from the September 2027 test. That's the sitting for today's Year 5, who would start secondary school in September 2028. The Consortium says the structure and format will be similar: two papers covering verbal and non-verbal reasoning, English and maths, still age-standardised, with 111 still the eligibility score. Detailed paper timings haven't been published yet, so we'll follow any familiarisation guidance the Consortium releases.

Children can sit both this test and the Bucks one, wherever they live, but each needs its own registration. Our Slough 11+ tuition page will cover the Consortium route in more depth. We're an independent tuition centre and have no connection with the Consortium or its schools.

Burnham Grammar School, 0.3 miles from our centre

Burnham Grammar School on Hogfair Lane is about 0.3 miles from our door, so for many households it's the grammar school closest to home. It admits through the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test and has 180 Year 7 places for 2027 entry. Children who reach the qualifying score are offered places in the order set out in the school's published admissions policy, so it's worth reading it before you apply.

Several primaries are within easy reach of the centre too: St Peter's CofE Primary (0.2 miles), Our Lady of Peace Catholic Primary (0.5 miles), Priory School and Lent Rise School (both 0.6 miles), Lynch Hill School Primary Academy (0.9 miles) and Cippenham School (1.3 miles). We mention them only to help you picture the area. None of these schools is a partner of ours. A dedicated Burnham Grammar School 11+ page is on the way.

How we prepare children for the 11+

Lessons can be 1-to-1, and online sessions are an option too. There's no minimum contract, although we recommend a full term so your child has time to settle in and build momentum. Whether your child needs an 11 plus verbal reasoning tutor, help with non-verbal puzzles or a steadier grip on maths, the plan is built around their gaps rather than a one-size course.

When should 11+ preparation start?

There's no single right moment, and starting early is never a promise of a particular score. Beginning in Year 4 or early Year 5 gives time to grow vocabulary, reading stamina and number confidence before timed practice becomes the focus. Starting later in Year 5 can still be worthwhile when a child mainly needs help with technique and nerves.

Both local tests are sat early in Year 6, so today's Year 5 pupils are the ones sitting in September 2027. If you're weighing up Year 5 11 plus tuition right now, the free consultation is a sensible first step: we'll see where your child stands and suggest a realistic timeline. Fees depend on your child's level, and we'll give you a clear quote after the free consultation, so that's the best moment to ask about 11 plus tuition cost.

Families we teach

Our centre at 36 High Street is right in the middle of Burnham. Families come to us from across the surrounding area: Burnham itself, Lent Rise, Hitcham, Taplow, Dorney and Farnham Royal on the Buckinghamshire side, and Cippenham, Britwell and Haymill on the Slough-borough side. Britwell is about 1.8 road miles away, Cippenham about 2.3 and Taplow about 2.7.

Maidenhead is roughly 3.9 road miles from the centre, and a guide for Maidenhead families will explain the out-of-county options. Slough town centre is about 3.5 road miles away, so families looking for 11 plus tuition Slough-side will find us a short drive west. If you were searching for 11 plus tuition near me, or an 11+ tuition centre with face-to-face lessons, we're on Burnham High Street.

After the 11+, our KS3 tuition supports Years 7 to 9, and GCSE tuition in Burnham picks up from Year 10. You can also read more about 1-to-1 tuition or head back to the Dr Khan Tuition homepage.

Common questions

11+ FAQs

Which 11+ does my child sit if we live in Burnham?
Burnham is in Buckinghamshire, so if your child attends a Bucks state primary they are entered for the Bucks Secondary Transfer Test automatically, unless you opt out. You can also register for the Slough Consortium test if you'd like to keep both options open.
We live in Cippenham or Britwell. Can my child sit both the Slough and Bucks 11+?
Yes. Cippenham and Britwell are part of Slough borough, so your child can sit the Slough Consortium test and can also register for the Bucks test. Each test has its own registration, so you will need to sign up for both.
What's changing with the Slough 11+?
From the September 2027 test, Quest Assessments replaces GL Assessment as the Consortium's test provider. The subjects stay the same: maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. The Consortium says the format will be similar, with two papers and the same eligibility score of 111.
When should my child start 11+ preparation?
Year 4 or Year 5 can both work, depending on your child's starting point. Beginning earlier allows more time to build skills but does not promise a result, so we suggest a timeline after the free consultation.
Do you teach verbal and non-verbal reasoning?
Yes. Alongside maths and English, our 11+ lessons cover verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning, which both local tests include. Many children find these question types unfamiliar at first, so we introduce them step by step.
Is 1-to-1 11+ tuition available?
Yes, 1-to-1 tuition is available, so lessons can move at your child's own pace. Online sessions are also offered if your child would rather learn from home.
