What is KS3?

Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8 and 9, when children are aged 11 to 14. The national curriculum's compulsory subjects at this stage include English, maths and science. Academies and private schools don't have to follow the national curriculum, but academies must still teach a broad and balanced curriculum that includes English, maths and science. In practice, every secondary pupil spends these three years building the knowledge their GCSE courses will assume.

Why KS3 gaps matter

There are no national tests in Years 7 to 9. Schools set their own assessments, which is sensible, but it means a gap can go unnoticed for a long time. A shaky grasp of fractions, negative numbers or algebra, or uncertainty about how to structure a paragraph, can travel quietly from Year 7 into Year 10. By then the GCSE course is moving quickly and there's less time to go back.

KS3 tuition is about finding those gaps while there's still plenty of room to fix them. It's often calmer than GCSE tuition, too: no looming exam, just steady progress. Short, regular lessons over a term or two can make a real difference, and the habits children pick up along the way, such as checking their working and reading questions carefully, stay with them.

A year-by-year view

YearTypical focusHow we help
Year 7Settling into secondary school; new teachers, subjects and expectationsCheck that primary maths and English are secure, and build good study habits
Year 8Harder algebra, longer texts and more scientific vocabularyStrengthen weaker topics before they become habits
Year 9Run-up to GCSE options and coursesMake sure foundations are ready for Year 10

KS3 maths tuition

KS3 maths covers number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability and statistics. We pay particular attention to the topics GCSE builds on most heavily: fractions, decimals and percentages, negative numbers, and forming and solving equations. If you've been searching for KS3 maths tutors near me, our first step is a diagnostic that shows exactly which of these is secure and which isn't.

KS3 English tuition

In English, children move from shorter primary texts to whole novels, poetry and their first Shakespeare. We work on reading closely, comprehension and inference, and on writing with a clear structure, accurate grammar and a wider vocabulary. Children who learn to plan a paragraph and support a point with evidence in Year 8 find GCSE English far less daunting.

KS3 science tuition

KS3 science lays the foundations of biology, chemistry and physics: cells, particles, forces, energy and more. Our KS3 science tuition focuses on scientific vocabulary, explaining ideas in clear sentences and the maths that science increasingly needs, such as reading graphs and rearranging simple formulae.

Starting secondary school: Year 7 after the 11+

Whether your child has just started at a grammar school or a non-selective secondary, Year 7 brings a jump in pace and independence. Some children who worked hard for the 11+ find the first year at grammar school a step up; others are ready for more challenge than they're getting. Either way, a short diagnostic shows where support would help. Our 11+ tuition page covers the years before secondary school.

Year 9 and GCSE options

Year 9 is when most students choose GCSE options, and it's a good moment to check that maths, English and science are on firm ground. Our GCSE tuition page explains what comes next, with more detail on GCSE maths, GCSE English and GCSE science.

How our KS3 lessons work

  1. Diagnose. We find out what your child already knows in each subject and where the gaps are.
  2. Weekly plan. A personalised plan follows within 48 hours of the consultation.
  3. Exam and study technique. Children learn how to revise, check their work and answer school test questions with confidence.
  4. Feedback loop. You'll hear regularly how your child is getting on, and what the next few weeks will cover.

Children can have 1-to-1 lessons, and online sessions are available for anyone who would rather learn from home.
