The Dr Khan Method

How our English lessons work

Diagnose

We start with a short reading task and a timed piece of writing, which show how your child reads, plans and writes under pressure.

Structured Learning

Within 48 hours you'll receive a personalised plan. Weekly lessons alternate between Language skills and Literature texts so that neither falls behind.

Exam Strategy

We teach the timing for each paper, how to plan before writing and how the assessment objectives shape what a strong answer contains.

Feedback Loop

Weekly updates tell you what your child has worked on, what has improved and which text or skill comes next.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

English is often the subject families leave until last, because it can seem impossible to revise. In fact, both English GCSEs reward skills that improve with practice: reading closely, planning quickly and writing with control. A maths-led centre may not be the first place you'd look for English help, but the same method works here. We find exactly where marks are slipping away, then practise until those marks are reliable.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

English Language: reading unseen texts and writing with control

English Language has no set texts. Instead, students meet unseen extracts, both fiction and non-fiction and from different centuries, and answer questions on language, structure and viewpoint. Each course also asks for pieces of the student's own writing. Because the texts are unseen, revision means building skills that transfer to any extract rather than memorising content.

In lessons, we work on reading an extract quickly for meaning, picking precise evidence and explaining the effect of a writer's choices in a sentence or two. For the writing tasks, we practise five-minute plans, varied sentence structures and descriptive or persuasive pieces that stay controlled from the opening line to the last.

English Literature: knowing set texts and writing about them with evidence

English Literature is a separate GCSE with its own grade. Every course includes a Shakespeare play, a 19th-century novel, a modern prose or drama text from the British Isles written since 1914 and a poetry selection, plus poems students haven't seen before. Literature exams are closed book: students can't take copies of their texts in, and the paper prints any extract a question needs. That makes knowing the plot, characters, themes and key quotations genuinely important.

We help students build revision notes they actually use, learn short quotations that fit many questions, and link each text to its context without turning essays into history lessons. Essay planning is the other half of the job: a clear argument, paragraphs that each make one point, and analysis that keeps returning to the question. Whether your child needs a GCSE English Literature tutor for one tricky text or support across the whole course, lessons start from what they find hardest.

Paper or skillWhat examiners look forHow we practise it
Reading unseen extractsAccurate understanding and well-chosen evidenceTimed reading with short, focused answers
Language and structure analysisComments on the writer's methods and their effectAnnotating extracts, then turning notes into paragraphs
Creative and persuasive writingClear organisation, ambitious vocabulary and accurate technical skillsQuick plans, then full timed pieces
Literature essaysA clear argument backed by evidence and relevant contextEssay plans, quotation recall and model paragraphs
Unseen poetryConfident analysis and comparison of new poemsRegular practice on poems students haven't studied

Exam boards we cover

GCSE English is offered by AQA, Edexcel, OCR and Eduqas. Language papers look quite different from board to board, with their own question types and mark allocations, and Literature courses differ in which texts and poetry anthologies schools can choose. So the first thing we ask is which board and which texts your child is studying.

Spelling, punctuation and grammar

Accuracy earns marks in both qualifications. In English Language, the writing tasks reward a range of vocabulary and sentence structures alongside accurate spelling and punctuation, and some Literature questions carry marks for spelling, punctuation and grammar too. We build accuracy into every lesson through short proofreading habits, attention to commonly confused words and practice at punctuating for effect, not just for correctness.

How our English lessons work

1-to-1 lessons are available, and online sessions suit English well, because so much of the work is reading and writing. Younger students in Years 7 to 9 can build the same habits early through our KS3 tuition.

Common questions

GCSE English FAQs

Do you teach both GCSE English Language and English Literature?
Yes. They are separate GCSEs, and we can support your child with one or both. Lessons balance unseen reading and writing practice for Language with set-text study and essay planning for Literature.
Which exam boards and set texts do you cover?
We plan lessons around your child's exam board and the texts their school has chosen. Tell us the board and set texts at the consultation, and practice will match them.
How can my child improve their GCSE English grade?
Progress usually comes from clearer planning, sharper use of evidence and regular timed writing. We begin with a diagnostic to find where marks are being lost, then practise those skills each week. We can't promise a grade, but you'll see what's improving.
Is GCSE English Literature closed-book?
Yes. Students can't take copies of their set texts into the exam, and any extract a question needs is printed in the paper, so knowing the texts well matters. Your child's board specification sets out exactly what is provided.
Is 1-to-1 GCSE English tuition available?
Yes. 1-to-1 lessons let us focus on your child's own texts, board and weaker skills, whether that's analysis, essay structure or accuracy.
Do you offer online English lessons?
Yes. Online sessions are available and follow the same personalised plan, with the same mix of reading, planning and timed writing.
