The Dr Khan Method

How our A-Level maths lessons work

Diagnose

We begin with a diagnostic built on GCSE algebra and early Year 12 topics, so we know whether any gaps come from recall, technique or confidence.

Structured Learning

Your child's personalised plan arrives within 48 hours of the consultation. Weekly lessons follow it in a logical order, with pure topics revisited regularly so they stay fresh for the end of Year 13.

Exam Strategy

We practise reading longer problems, choosing an efficient method, showing enough working to earn method marks and checking each answer against the context of the question.

Feedback Loop

Parents receive weekly updates on what has been covered and what needs more work, so the plan can change early rather than late.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Plenty of students who sailed through GCSE maths find the first term of Year 12 a shock. The algebra moves faster, proof appears for the first time, and a single question can fill a whole page. If you've been searching for an A-Level maths tutor near me, our aim is simple: make that step manageable, with secure technique first and then the confidence to tackle problems that don't look like anything in the textbook.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

What A-Level maths covers

Every board teaches the same content, set by the Department for Education. On every board's papers, roughly two-thirds of the marks are for pure maths and about one-third for applied maths, shared between statistics and mechanics. Everything is examined at the end of Year 13, so topics learnt in the first weeks of Year 12 still need to be sharp nearly two years later.

StrandWhat it coversWhere students often struggle
Pure mathsProof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration, numerical methods and vectorsLong chains of algebra, choosing an integration method and setting out a proof clearly
StatisticsSampling, presenting and interpreting data, probability, statistical distributions and hypothesis testing, using a large data setExplaining results in context and knowing the large data set well enough to use it
MechanicsQuantities and units, kinematics, forces and Newton's laws, and momentsDrawing accurate force diagrams and turning a worded situation into equations

Further maths: is it right for your child?

Further maths is a second, separate A-Level. Half of it is a compulsory core of pure maths, with topics such as complex numbers, matrices, further calculus and proof by induction. The rest is made up of optional areas that vary by board, usually drawn from further pure, further statistics, further mechanics and decision maths.

It suits students who enjoy maths for its own sake and are comfortable working at pace, because two maths A-Levels mean a heavier load of practice every week. If your child's sixth form doesn't offer further maths, or offers it with limited lesson time, a further maths tutor can help fill the gap. We'll give you an honest view at the consultation of whether it's a good fit, without promising any particular outcome.

Exam boards we cover

A-Level maths is offered by AQA, Edexcel, OCR A and OCR B (MEI). Before planning anything, we ask which specification your child follows. The core content is shared, but the boards differ in how papers are split, which large data set students study and how questions are phrased, so practice is always matched to the right one.

BoardPaper 1Paper 2Paper 3
AQAPurePure and mechanicsPure and statistics
EdexcelPure 1Pure 2Statistics and mechanics
OCR APurePure and statisticsPure and mechanics
OCR B (MEI)Pure and mechanicsPure and statisticsPure and comprehension

Every paper lasts two hours. All three papers count equally, except OCR B (MEI), where the third paper carries fewer marks.

The jump from GCSE to A-Level maths

Three things tend to catch new sixth-formers out. First, algebra has to become automatic: factorising, rearranging and working with indices and surds come up in almost every question. Second, proof asks students to explain why something is always true, not just show that it works once. Third, the statistics papers expect students to know their board's large data set and to comment on results in context.

Students moving up from our GCSE maths tuition often use the summer after Year 11 to tighten their algebra before term starts. Those who took AQA's Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths or OCR's Level 3 Additional Maths will recognise some topics, which is useful preparation rather than a requirement.

How our A-Level maths lessons work

Dr Khan founded the centre, and sessions with him can be booked depending on availability. Other students are taught by our wider team of tutors, all trained in Dr Khan's method. There's no minimum contract, although we recommend a full term so the plan has time to work.

Thinking about a maths-heavy degree?

Some maths, economics and computer science courses ask applicants to sit the TMUA, the Test of Mathematics for University Admission. Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick and Durham use it for some courses, so it's worth checking each course page early in Year 12. Our TMUA preparation page explains the test, the dates and how we help. Students taking physics or chemistry as well can read about the maths inside those subjects on our A-Level science tuition page.

Students from Burnham, Cippenham, Taplow and Maidenhead

Our centre sits a short walk from Burnham Grammar School (0.3 miles), which has its own sixth form. Herschel Grammar is about 2.3 miles away, and other local secondaries, including Beechwood School (1.5 miles) and The Westgate School (2.0 miles), are within easy reach too. We mention these schools as neighbours only; we're an independent centre with no link to any of them.

By road, Britwell is about 1.8 miles from us, Cippenham about 2.3, Taplow about 2.7 and Maidenhead about 3.9, while Slough-side families are around 3.5 road miles away. If you're looking for an A-Level maths tutor in person near me, rather than online-only help, our High Street centre offers face-to-face lessons each week.

Our A-Level tuition page covers every sixth-form subject we teach, 1-to-1 tuition explains individual lessons, and the Dr Khan Tuition homepage has everything else.

Common questions

A-Level maths FAQs

Close-up of a young student's hands working through sums on squared paper with a red pencil
Do you teach A-Level further maths as well as maths?
Yes. We teach both A-Level maths and A-Level further maths, and students can have lessons in one or both. Tell us which further maths options your child's school has chosen and we'll plan around them.
Which exam boards do you cover for A-Level maths?
Tell us your child's specification at the consultation, whether that's AQA, Edexcel, OCR A or OCR B (MEI), and we'll explain how lessons would follow it.
Is further maths much harder than A-Level maths?
It moves faster and goes further into abstract topics such as complex numbers and matrices, so it needs more practice each week. Students who enjoy maths and keep on top of the work often find it the most rewarding part of their timetable.
My child got a 7 at GCSE. Can they cope with A-Level maths?
The GCSE grade alone doesn't tell the whole story, and your child's sixth form sets its own entry requirements. A diagnostic at the start shows which skills need strengthening, and we'll be honest about the support that would help.
Do you help with statistics and mechanics, or just pure?
We cover all three strands. Statistics and mechanics make up about a third of the A-Level, so we give them proper time rather than leaving them until the end.
Is 1-to-1 or online A-Level maths tuition available?
Yes. 1-to-1 lessons are available at our Burnham centre, and online sessions are an option for students who would rather learn from home.
