The Dr Khan Method

How A-Level tuition works

Diagnose

We look at your child's GCSE foundations, recent school assessments and confidence in each topic to find where marks are slipping away.

Structured Learning

A personalised plan arrives within 48 hours of the consultation, and each weekly lesson works through it with the summer exams and any university deadlines in mind.

Exam Strategy

A-Level papers expect sustained reasoning. We practise long-answer and multi-step questions, mark-scheme wording and how to divide time between sections.

Feedback Loop

Weekly updates for parents show how each subject is moving, so support can be adjusted early rather than in a panic in May.

Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

The step from GCSE to A-Level surprises many students. There are fewer subjects, but each one goes much deeper, independent study suddenly matters, and university applications arrive sooner than expected. Sixth-form tuition with us gives that extra structure: a clear plan for each subject, regular practice with exam-style questions and someone checking that nothing is slipping.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

A-Level maths and further maths

A-Level maths combines pure maths with statistics and mechanics, and further maths takes each strand considerably further. Both demand fluent algebra and the stamina to work through long, unfamiliar problems. Our lessons focus on secure technique first, then on applying it under exam conditions. Students searching for an A-Level maths tutor near me will find much more on our A-Level maths tuition page, including how further maths fits alongside it.

A-Level biology, chemistry and physics

The sciences at A-Level test detailed knowledge, required practical skills and a good deal of maths, especially in chemistry and physics. We help students organise the content, practise calculations and write precise answers that use the right scientific language. Gunnpreet, who studied A-Level Biology and Chemistry with us, achieved A*A* and is now studying Dentistry at King's College London. Anyone looking for A-Level chemistry tutors near you, or support with biology or physics, can read more on our A-Level science tuition page.

Economics, psychology and sociology

These subjects reward clear essay structure, accurate use of key terms and the ability to evaluate evidence. We teach students how to plan extended answers, apply theories and studies to unfamiliar scenarios and keep to time. If you're after an A-Level economics or psychology tutor nearby, our economics and psychology tuition page will cover both in more depth.

University admissions tests: TMUA and ESAT

Some university courses ask applicants to sit an admissions test as part of the application. The TMUA (Test of Mathematics for University Admission) is used by seven universities, including Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE and Warwick, for some maths, economics and computer science courses. ESAT (the Engineering and Science Admissions Test) is used by Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL for some engineering, physics, natural sciences and veterinary courses. Both can be sat in October or January, and Cambridge and Oxford applicants normally need the October sitting. We prepare students for both. Requirements vary by university and course, so always check each university's own entry page. Our TMUA and ESAT tuition page will explain how ESAT tutoring and TMUA preparation work with us.

How A-Level tuition works

When to start A-Level tuition

There's no wrong time, but the timing changes what lessons focus on. Starting in Year 12 helps students settle into the depth of A-Level early and avoid gaps building up before the summer. Joining in Year 13 usually means tighter priorities: revisiting weaker topics, refining exam technique and balancing study with personal statements and admissions tests. We'll suggest a sensible starting point after the consultation.

1-to-1 tuition is available, and online sessions are an option for students juggling sixth-form timetables. There's no minimum contract, although a full term is recommended. See our 1-to-1 tuition page for more.

Students and sixth forms near our centre

Sixth-formers come to us from Burnham and the nearby villages, from Cippenham and Britwell (both around 2 road miles away) and from Maidenhead, about 3.9 road miles from the centre. Local sixth forms include Burnham Grammar School, just 0.3 miles away, which has its own sixth form, and Herschel Grammar, 2.3 miles away. We mention these schools only as local landmarks; we're an independent centre with no tie to either.

If you've searched for A-Level tuition near me and want face-to-face lessons rather than online-only help, our centre on Burnham High Street is a short trip from home. Families looking for A-Level tuition Slough-side will find Britwell around 1.8 road miles away.

Still in Year 11? Our GCSE tuition and GCSE maths tuition pages explain how we help before sixth form, or return to the homepage.

A-Level FAQs

Which A-Level subjects do you teach?
We teach A-Level maths, further maths, biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, sociology and economics. We also prepare students for the TMUA and ESAT admissions tests.
Which A-Level exam boards do you cover?
Lessons are planned around your child's own board in each subject. Tell us the board for each subject at the consultation and lessons will follow that specification.
Can you help with TMUA or ESAT preparation?
Yes. We help students prepare for both tests alongside their A-Levels. TMUA is used by Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE, UCL, Warwick and Durham, and ESAT by Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL, each for some courses only, so check which test, if any, your child's choices ask for. The January 2027 sitting runs from 4 to 8 January, with booking closing on 21 December 2026, while Cambridge and Oxford applicants normally sit in October.
Can my child sit A-Level maths early?
For an exceptional student it can happen, with a careful plan and a school that supports it. Our A-Level maths page has one student's story.
Is 1-to-1 A-Level tuition available?
Yes, 1-to-1 A-Level lessons are available and are planned around your child's subjects and goals. Tell us at the consultation which subjects need the most help.
Do you offer online A-Level lessons?
Yes. Online sessions are available if your child prefers to study from home, which can help around a busy sixth-form timetable.
