Which 11+ test does Burnham Grammar use?

The Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test, set by GL Assessment: two multiple-choice papers taken at the start of Year 6. Our Bucks 11+ guide explains the papers, the practice test and familiarisation materials in detail.

What score does my child need?

A Secondary Transfer Test Score of 121 or more means a child qualifies for consideration at any Buckinghamshire grammar school. Qualifying isn't the same as being offered a place here, though. If more qualified children apply than there are places, the school's oversubscription criteria decide who is offered one.

How we prepare

How lessons feel

Dr Khan Tuition is an independent tuition centre and isn't connected with Burnham Grammar School.

This guide is written as a neighbour, not an insider. Everything here comes from Buckinghamshire Council and the school's own published documents, which are linked at the end. Policies change each year, so always check the latest versions before you apply.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

How places are offered if the school is oversubscribed

For September 2027 entry, the school's admissions policy sets out the order below. This is our summary, not the policy itself, so please read the full document.

  1. Children who are looked after, or were previously looked after.
  2. A small number of places (up to six) for looked-after or previously looked-after children living anywhere, or Pupil Premium children living in the catchment area, who scored between 115 and 120 and didn't qualify through a selection review. Looked-after and previously looked-after children come first within this group.
  3. Pupil Premium children living in the catchment area.
  4. Children with a brother or sister at the school when they start.
  5. Children with a brother or sister who previously attended the school.
  6. Children with an exceptional medical or social need that only this school can meet, supported by written evidence.
  7. Qualified children of staff.
  8. Other children living in the catchment area.
  9. All other qualified children.

If two children can't be separated within a category, the one living closer to the nearest school gate, measured in a straight line using Buckinghamshire Council's method, is offered the place first. If that still doesn't separate them, places are decided by independent random selection.

The policy for September 2028 entry hasn't been published yet. When it is, check whether the order or any of the details have changed.

Pupil Premium priority

Children eligible for the Pupil Premium have priority in two of the categories above. Families who think they qualify must tell the school by emailing admissions@burnhamgrammar.org.uk by 31 October, as the school's admissions page asks, and the child must be eligible as at the application deadline. Check the 2028 policy for the exact wording when it's published.

Key dates for September 2028 entry

Buckinghamshire Council's timeline covers children born between 1 September 2016 and 31 August 2017. So far it gives months rather than exact days.

Applying from outside Buckinghamshire

Children at Bucks state primaries, such as St Peter's CofE Primary or Lent Rise School near our centre, are entered for the test automatically. Children at Slough-borough primaries, including Our Lady of Peace, Priory, Lynch Hill, Cippenham and Claycots, aren't, so their families must register. The same applies to Maidenhead children. There's no separate rule for out-of-county applicants: they register for testing with Buckinghamshire Council, name the school on their own council's application form, and are considered under the same criteria, usually the last category unless an earlier one applies. Our pages for Cippenham, Britwell and Haymill families and Maidenhead families explain the local options.

Joining the sixth form

Burnham Grammar has around 40 places in Year 12 for students joining from other schools, and the policy says more may be admitted once internal numbers are known. Under the 2027 policy, applicants need 46 points from their best eight GCSEs, including at least grade 5 in English and maths. Our A-Level tuition supports students in the run-up to sixth form.

How we help children aiming for Burnham Grammar

  1. Diagnose. We assess verbal reasoning, maths and non-verbal reasoning to see where your child stands.
  2. Plan. A personalised weekly plan follows within 48 hours.
  3. Practise. Lessons use multiple-choice practice in the style of the Bucks test, with timing built in.
  4. Feedback. Parents hear regularly how things are going.

We don't promise outcomes; no tutor honestly can. Lessons can be 1-to-1, and our 11+ tuition page compares the Bucks and Slough tests.

Catchment and your home address

Burnham Grammar's catchment area is defined in Buckinghamshire's admissions scheme, and Buckinghamshire Council's school directory links to a catchment map. Under the 2027 policy, catchment residence counts from 1 September of the year before entry. For most Bucks grammar schools, the home address used for the main allocation is the one on 1 September of the test year, so 1 September 2027 for September 2028 entry, but check the school's own policy for its exact rule.
