Weekly lessons in Burnham

How lessons feel

Finding the right GCSE maths tutor can feel like a gamble when so much depends on one grade. Maths is needed for most sixth-form courses and plenty of careers, and confidence in it tends to spill over into science too. Our approach is calm and methodical: we find out exactly what your child can and can't yet do, then work through it week by week.

Structured Weekly Plans

Every session follows a structured plan targeting your child's specific knowledge gaps, not random revision.

Individual 1-to-1 Tuition

Individual 1-to-1 tuition is available. Your child gets real, focused attention, not lost in a classroom of 30.

Weekly Parent Updates

Parents receive weekly progress updates. You always know exactly where your child stands.

The Dr Khan Method

How our GCSE maths lessons work

Diagnose

A diagnostic paper pinpoints which topics are secure, which are half-remembered and which haven't been taught yet.

Structured Learning

Within 48 hours of the consultation you'll receive a personalised plan. Weekly lessons then work through it topic by topic, revisiting weaker areas until they stick.

Exam Strategy

In maths, marks come from method as well as answers. We show students how examiners award method marks, how to set out working clearly, and how to manage time across a calculator and non-calculator paper.

Feedback Loop

Parents receive weekly progress updates, so you'll know which topics have clicked and what's coming next.

Sessions with Dr Khan himself can be booked depending on availability; otherwise your child is taught by our wider team of tutors, all trained in Dr Khan's method.

What does GCSE maths tuition cover?

GCSE maths is split into two tiers. Foundation tier covers grades 1 to 5, and Higher tier covers grades 4 to 9. Your child's school normally decides which tier they're entered for, so we teach to that entry and keep an eye on whether a move up makes sense.

Across both tiers, lessons work through the six content areas every board uses: number; algebra; ratio, proportion and rates of change; geometry and measures; probability; and statistics. The boards share the same core content but differ in how papers are set out and how questions are worded, so practice is matched to your child's board.

QualificationWho it suits
GCSE Maths, Foundation tierStudents building secure basics and aiming for a grade 4 or 5
GCSE Maths, Higher tierStudents working towards grades 4 to 9

Beyond GCSE maths: extra qualifications to know about

For students who find the standard GCSE comfortable, an extra qualification can make Year 10 and 11 more interesting and smooth the jump to A-Level. AQA's Level 2 Certificate in Further Maths goes beyond Higher-tier GCSE in number, algebra, coordinate geometry and geometry, and introduces calculus and matrix transformations. It's sat as two papers of 1 hour 45 minutes, one without a calculator. OCR's Additional Maths is a Level 3 Free Standing Maths Qualification, a step above GCSE: one two-hour paper covering algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry, calculus, numerical methods, and exponentials and logarithms, and it carries UCAS points. GCSE Statistics is a separate GCSE focused on collecting, presenting and interpreting data, which suits students heading towards psychology, biology, geography or economics.

Moving up a tier or aiming for grade 7 to 9

Moving from Foundation to Higher, or from a grade 6 towards a 7, 8 or 9, is usually less about learning brand-new maths and more about handling unfamiliar, multi-step problems. When that's the goal, lessons spend more time on problem-solving questions, algebraic proof and the topics that only appear on Higher papers. We'll be straightforward about what's realistic: any tier change is your child's school's decision, and we can't promise a particular grade. What we can do is make sure your child walks into the exam having practised the kinds of questions that top grades demand. For students at the other end of the scale, securing a grade 4 or 5 is just as important, and lessons then concentrate on reliable marks from the most common question types.

Some young mathematicians are ready for GCSE well before Year 11. For a few exceptional students, the same path leads on to A-Level maths years ahead of schedule. Early entry is a big decision, and our early GCSE maths page will explain what it involves.

Common questions

GCSE maths FAQs

Do you teach Foundation and Higher tier GCSE maths?
Yes. We teach both tiers and match lessons to the tier your child's school has entered them for. If a move between tiers is being discussed, we can help your child prepare for the content involved.
Which exam boards do you cover for GCSE maths?
Lessons follow your child's own GCSE maths specification, with practice matched to that board. Tell us which board your child is studying when you book.
What's the difference between AQA Further Maths and OCR Additional Maths?
AQA Further Maths is a Level 2 certificate that stretches strong GCSE students with harder algebra, matrices and an introduction to calculus. OCR Additional Maths is a Level 3 qualification, a step closer to AS-level, with more calculus plus trigonometry, logarithms and numerical methods. We can talk through which one suits your child.
Can my child take GCSE maths early?
It is possible, and Dr Khan has taught pupils who sat GCSE maths years ahead of schedule. We will only recommend it if your child is genuinely ready.
Does Dr Khan teach GCSE maths personally?
Sessions with Dr Khan can be booked depending on his availability. You can ask about this when you book your consultation, and we will let you know what is possible.
How do I book a free consultation?
Call us on 01753 378222 or email info@drkhantuition.co.uk. The consultation is free and lasts 30 minutes.
